Why You Absolutely Need an SSL Certificate added to your site

That scary page reads: proceed at your own risk. Many potential clients will NOT.

Google will not show websites in their search results that don't have an ssl certificate.

The public is aware that sites without an "https://" address are not secure. Most will immediately be turned off to your company, despite having heard great word of mouth reviews.

Which means when you go to a site that has an SSL, your browser will decipher the encryption code and confirm that the site reached is the site you believe it to be. Browsers, (ie., Google, Bink) then creates a tunnel like connection from your computer to the intended website, this tunnel creates a privacy path for all the information you receive or send. Hackers and others, can't "break" into the tunnel to steal your information. There are many different levels of security options available to site owners, and which one to choose is based on what info you receive and send and how critical that information is. For example, E commerce websites need a higher security level that a general information only site would.

With a essential SSL certificate, you will need to varify that you are the owner of the site. The more advanced SSL's validate the company information as well as the site ownership.

When visiting a website in which the web address appears green in the address bar, this color/symbol represents that the owner of the site has verified not only website ownership, but has taken measures to verify the legitimacy of the business. This includes the company name, address, phone numbers, company structure plus more.

Should a site have only the lock icon, the lock icon represents that the company represented does in fact own that website. In addition, the web address will have an "s" added to the beginning of the websites "http://" making it "https://".  Certainly this type of certificate, while not guaranteeing more than ownership of the site, is certificate is perfectly acceptable if your site is an informational site and doesn't have client membership functionality or accept payments, or collect other confidential information.

Sites that have a thousands of visitors a day,or  a minute, or a second, require a higher level security certificate compared to another eCommerce website having 100's of visitors a day. In addition, there are SSL certificate levels for all the in between those two examples.

Three Authentication Levels of SSL Certificates

(DV),(OV) and (EV)

DV certificates are a basic certificates with minimal authentication.  This certificate only requires prove ownership of the registered domain.

This certificate can be issued quickly. It is a perfect solution for personal sites, non-business sites, information only sites and blogs.

This will allow the site to have a "https://" address, the website won't be flagged as dangerous, proceed at own risk, and the lock icon in the address bar.

OV certificates  require additional verification to be issued, this degree of authentication assures website visitors that the website is who it represents itself to be.

The requirements to have an SSL OV Certificate issued, proof that the organization is a legitimate legal entity which includes: Locality, Telephone, Domain Ownership, Organization Authentication, and a Final Verification Call.

The OV Certificates take a bit longer to be issued than a DV certificate.

EV certificates offer the greatest deal of authentication and sometimes will include other security products like malware scanners and vulnerability assessments.

A SSL EV Certificate will be issued after an extensive vetting from the Certificate Authority issuing the certification. Requirements include: Physical Address, Telephone Verification, Domain Authentication, A completed Enrollment Form, Organization Authentication, Operational Existence and a Final Verification Call.

EV Certificates take longer to issue, but once installed on the website will create the Green Address Bar that is recognized as a secure site by almost all website visitors.

EV Certificates are the more costly of certificates, however, the expense has been proven to easily be absorbed with the expected boost in conversations.
